đź’ˇ 10 Reasons to Call Your Best Friend Today

Jim Wall | The Adventure Chronicles

Yearly commitments change our direction. Ten year commitments change our life. Here are 10 simple lessons I learned from a decade-old ski club with best friends.

Have you ever talked about a fun plan with friends, 100% intending to make it happen…

And then it just never happened?

At the end of college we made the promise most friends probably make: we will stick together forever.

At that point in life we weren’t married, didn’t have careers, mortgages, or children. How could we promise such a thing?

Most people would say there’s no way that’s possible.

And they are dead wrong.

With spouses, demanding jobs, living in 3 different time zones, and children in the mix, we’ve never missed our annual ski trip for a full decade.

What began as a trip about skiing and cold beer evolved into a trip about much more than that (though those two are still a permanent fixture).

It became a time to share our accomplishments, major challenges, and urge each other ever forward.

Lessons from a Decade

1) Learning from friends in other careers gives you a creative advantage in your own.

2) Non-negotiable plans don’t make you inflexible, they make you interesting.

3) Good friends don’t ask if you’re successful, they ask if you are happy.

4) A lively dinner with stories and laughter is worth 100 catch-up calls.

5) The excitement of an annual trip pays dividends far beyond the trip itself.

6) Your problems become less scary when a friend listens first, and then proceeds to joke about them.

7) When you give big life updates only a few times a year, your priorities naturally become very clear.

8) Activities are just an excuse to engage in what matters most, expressing and enjoying your honest feelings.

9) Find things in life worth doing for the rest of your life.

10) You don’t remember the extra $250 spent renting snowmobiles, you remember who won the race.

The Bottom Line

If you don’t block time and commit, your adventure will never happen.

The real question must be, who’s coming along with me?

My challenge for you this week is to call a close friend and plan a getaway. It can be a weekend or an afternoon excursion.

It can be this week or in 6 months, but put it on the calendar and let the excitement build.

All adventures start with a single conversation.
